Langley Insiders graphic: Three names, one post office, Fort Langley 1875 to 1925

Name changes

1 March 1875: Langley Post Office opens

1 December 1912: Renamed Langley Fort Post Office

1 July 1925: Renamed Fort Langley Post Office

Plain Langley first

The village's first post office opened on March 1, 1875, and it was simply called Langley, according to BC Geographical Names. That's two years after the Township incorporated.

Then Langley Fort

On Dec 1, 1912, it became the Langley Fort Post Office. BC Lands printed that name on its 1915 map. On Canada Day 1925 it switched again, to Fort Langley, and that one stuck.

The provincial file says the community form of the name changed once more in 1982, but locals have called it Fort Langley for a century.

Make a morning of it. Grab a croissant at Blacksmith Bakery, then walk to the old CN station. Our Fort Langley 101 has more.
