A dream that waited 23 years

Jack Scott wanted to open a bowling alley in Vernon in 1939. It didn't happen. So he and his wife Dorothy waited, and in April 1962 they opened Alder Lanes on their own property in Aldergrove, with their house just east of the building.

The Aldergrove Star told the story in March 2025. The Scotts had bowled in a league in Abbotsford for seven years and wanted their hometown to have its own lanes. Jack had owned J.E. Scott Motors, served with the Aldergrove Volunteer Fire Department, and chaired the Aldergrove Fair board for a decade.

'A dream come true'

That's how Jack described the new alley to the Star in 1962. He ran it as a family business with Dorothy and their two daughters.

He didn't get long with it. Jack died suddenly that December. Dorothy stayed in Aldergrove for many years before moving to Kamloops, and she died in 1999, the paper reported.

Insider highlight

For Jack Scott, the alley was “a dream come true.”

Six lanes, then ten

The alley opened with six lanes. Four more went in during the 1970s, which gives you the 10 five-pin lanes there today. The old name changed along the way, and Alder Lanes became Alder Alley.

Five-pin is the Canadian version of the game. The balls are small with no finger holes, so it's friendly for kids and anyone who hasn't bowled since a birthday party in 1994.

The last alley in Langley

Willowbrook Lanes closed in 2017, so Alder Alley is now the only bowling alley in the City or the Township, the Star reported.

“As a sport it isn't as popular as it use to be, but since so many other bowling alleys have closed we have bowlers that come from all over,” Troylena Oliver told the Star in 2025.
