Serving Aldergrove since 2002
On 272 Street, a block of downtown Aldergrove that's mostly shops, there's an old green house with a red Trek awning over the porch and a sign out front that says “Make the World Better.” That's Cranky's Bike Shop.
“The Cranky's journey began in 2002 in a 400 square foot garage in rural Aldergrove,” the shop writes on its website. After a few years of growth it needed more room and a more central spot, so it moved into “a renovated farmhouse in the downtown Aldergrove commercial district.”
The shop says those small beginnings “birthed an appreciation for every customer's contribution to the life of our business.” More than 20 years later, that's still how it works.

A family business in a former house
The man behind the counter is owner Heath MacKenzie. (Local papers have spelled his last name three ways; we've used the spelling from the most recent coverage.) A 2016 Aldergrove Star story about an overnight attempt to break in through the shop's roof noted that he owns the building, a former house he remodelled extensively when he moved “his family's bicycle sales and repair business” into it.
The Langley Advance Times called him a co-owner in 2022. We haven't confirmed who shares the business with him, or the story behind the name Cranky's. Those are the first two things we'll ask.

Riding out the bike boom
When gyms closed during the pandemic, everyone wanted a bike, and the world ran short. In 2022 MacKenzie told the Langley Advance Times the shortage hadn't ended. “We are getting bikes, but those are bikes we ordered 12 to 18 months ago.”
He was still upbeat. “We have been in Aldergrove for 20 years and we have many repeat and dedicated customers, as well as new people coming in all the time.” When U.S. tariffs loomed in 2025, he told the Aldergrove Star the shop's Canadian brands should be fine. “We have always tried to purchase Canadian products so our brands like Norco and Rocky Mountain should not be affected.”

'A small shop with a big heart'
That's how the shop describes itself, and its community page backs it up: the Aldergrove Bike Jam, the Aldergrove Food Bank's bike program, Cops for Cancer, Youth Unlimited and World Bicycle Relief, plus local groups like Langley BMX.
Families get a deal too. The Half Back Program gives you back up to half of what you paid for a kids' bike when you buy the next size up at Cranky's. Every new bike comes with a one-year service plan. “Whether you ride three days per year or three hours per day you and your bike will always be treated with the utmost respect,” the shop promises.

'More about service than sales'
Google reviewers mostly agree. “This place is more about service than sales,” one wrote. Another called it “a low-key landmark of Aldergrove.” Not every review is glowing: one customer said their bikes kept coming back from service with scratches.
Not sure where to ride your new bike? MacKenzie has suggestions. “There are great trails in Sumas, Bear Mountain in Mission, the Discovery Trails in Abbotsford, or the Matsqui Flats, or many people drive to Mud Bay to cycle. For the road bike enthusiasts, there is 0 Avenue or many locations in Fort Langley.”
One last tip from the shop's own FAQ: there are other Cranky's out there, and they aren't connected. This one is the old farmhouse on 272 Street. It's closed on Sundays, so bring your bike in on a Saturday.
