"One Sunday morning in church, Matt received a vision of an old house as a restaurant with the name Beatniks. The vision was crystal clear." That's how Angela Hazelton explained the name to the Vancouver Sun in 2015.
Matt is Matt Choquette, the owner, and he's her dad. "Matt loves to tell the story in full," she added. "We give the credit to Jesus, the entire concept was heaven sent."

The old Moorhouse place
The house on Glover Road was built in 1933 as the Moorhouse residence, which makes it one of the oldest buildings in Fort Langley, the bistro says. It stood empty for a while. Then the Choquette family bought it and started dreaming of a cool little restaurant with great food and great music.
By 2015 Beatniks had been a Glover Road fixture for seven years, the Sun noted. Angela co-managed it with her father back then.

A long first career
Before Beatniks, Matt spent 32 years with B.C.'s Ministry of Transportation and ended up overseeing multi-million dollar projects, according to a 2016 listing for a Business by the Book talk he was booked to give in Vancouver. The same listing said he and his eldest daughter run the bistro together.
Giving back is part of how they run it. In 2020 Beatniks gave $4,000 to the Langley School District Foundation's Food for Thought program. Angela, by then general manager, said the restaurant donates a share of its profits to charity every year. "I can't think of a better charity than one that feeds kids and their families," she said.

Regulars get a vote
Beatniks once let its regulars test the winter menu. "We invited our regular customers for a private tasting of the winter menu, complete with comment cards for each dish," Angela told the Sun. The kitchen tweaked the dishes from that feedback.
Today the French dip leads. One diner called it "flavorful, well-made, and very satisfying," and another called a lettuce-wrapped bacon cheeseburger "superb."

A patio built for Saturdays
The patio is the big draw in summer. Back in 2015 the bistro had 104 seats in patio season and 50 in winter, Angela said. One reviewer liked the "good atmosphere out on the patio on a sunny Saturday afternoon" and called the menu "just the right size."
Not every visit lands. One returning diner got a bill charge they couldn't explain, along with underripe avocado on their toast. Most reviews stay warm, though, and the bistro holds 4.5 stars on Google.

Thursdays, and winter groups
Live music plays every Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., and weekend brunch runs until 2:30 p.m. The bistro is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
Beatniks generally doesn't take reservations. Winter is the exception, when it'll book groups of six to 16. Email hello@beatniksbistro.com, or call (604) 888-4487 if you need a table within 48 hours.
